Lotus ~ Beneath the Surface

The lotus flower that grows towards the light and draws nourishment from the swamp and swamp is a symbol of wisdom and development. The lotus flower is a symbol of purity and spiritual power in both the Buddhist and Hindu religions as well as the culture of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt. The lotus flower has come to symbolize rebirth and thus the physical or material reality. The mantra Om Mani Padme Aum "The Jewel in the Lotus", is a tribute to the consciousness within us, the jewel, the diamond within us. The lotus is then a symbol of our physical nature. Therefore, the lotus flower is an obvious symbol of yoga. Yoga works with both the spiritual and the physical aspect of us.
